As the end of the COVID-19 pandemic approaches and people make plans to travel again, Travel + Leisure magazine just release its list of “The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2021”. Landing on the list is the “Middle Keys” area of the Florida Keys: Duck Key, Marathon, Big Pine…and all areas in between!

While the Travel + Leisure article lists excursions such a scuba diving and our local turtle hospital for your vacation agenda, there is so much more to do, see, and experience here than the article describes.

For starters, the Middle Keys are just far enough away from the mainland and Miami to make you feel like. you are in the Caribbean…without ever using your passport. And you can drive here in your own car without getting on an airplane – something to be said for that as we are emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic!

But once you get to the Middle Keys, it’s quieter than Key Largo and Key West. Its a laid-back chain of islands with a “five o’clock somewhere” culture. The most popular pleasurable pursuits here are fishing and happy hour. But we also have plenty of beautiful public beaches (my favorites are Sombrero Beach and Curry Hammock Beach), snorkeling excursions to Sombrero Lighthouse. But don’t forget the most venerated of all pursuits in the Florida Keys: the art of doing nothing at all. Let the salty ocean breeze blow through your hair, feel the warm sand beneath your bare feet, and let the warmth of the island sun gently kiss your skin.

So set your out-of-office email notice to “ON ISLAND TIME”, pack your flip flops, and head on down to the Florida Keys in 2021!
